It is proudly certified as a Level I Trauma Center, handling over 3,000 trauma cases annually. The Charles F. Knight Emergency & Trauma Center (Adult) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital occupies the ground floor of a multistory building with surgical suites, radiology, laboratory, and essential services. The Trauma Center receives 95,000 ED visits annually. The Trauma Anesthesiology Division features specialized faculty experts in resuscitation and the care of critically ill and injured patients. Their areas of expertise encompass cardiac anesthesia, critical care, and military medicine. These trauma anesthesiologists provide state-of-the-art preoperative care for patients with urgent or emergent surgical needs. They also play a pivotal role in managing and triaging cases across all anesthetic locations at WashU. Every patient admitted to the Emergency Department for level-one trauma receives dedicated support from the Trauma Anesthesia team. Barnes-Jewish Hospital operates a dedicated trauma operating room, consistently staffed 24/7 with an attending anesthesiologist, accompanied by either a CRNA or a Resident/Fellow physician. Education As a renowned academic institution and a nationally recognized anesthesia residency, we are dedicated to providing trainees with a comprehensive and immersive experience in trauma anesthesia, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to excel in this dynamic and critical field. Residents rotate with the trauma team multiple times during their training, and they have a dedicated education curriculum, led by trauma faculty, to teach specifics of trauma care. In addition, Washington University is one of only a handful of programs around the nation that offer a fellowship in Trauma Anesthesia. Knittel appointed Interim Division Chief for new Division of Trauma Anesthesiology Justin Knittel, MD, will serve as Interim Division Chief for our new Division of Trauma Anesthesiology, effective August 1, 2023 Dr. Charles Baysinger joins the Department of Anesthesiology Dr. Charles Baysinger has joined the Divisions of Critical Care Medicine and General Anesthesiology at Washington University as a Voluntary Clinical Instructor of Anesthesiology.
