Importantly, members of the group spend part of their time in clinical activities other than cardiothoracic anesthesiology including the Perioperative Medicine Division and General Division. Additionally, seven members of the division, are critical care physicians, in addition to being cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, and staff the cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CT-ICU). The Division is dedicated to providing care to patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery, interventional cardiology and electrophysiology procedures, and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography. The cardiothoracic anesthesiology division provides services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Division faculty provide care for patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical and interventional procedures which include: coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve repair and replacement, mitral valve repair and replacement, adult congenital surgery, and heart failure/transplant. In addition to a busy cardiac surgical service, faculty provide care for complicated thoracic surgery including lung resections and pneumonectomy, esophageal resections and surgery as well as airway surgery including tracheal resections.  Our faculty have a wide range of interests including perioperative medicine, critical care medicine, general anesthesiology as well as basic and clinical/translational research.  Our CT Surgery colleagues are similarly eclectic, talented and diverse, and enjoy clinical, educational, and academic collaborations with us. Both the operating suite and the CT-ICU are well-appointed, boasting friendly environments, collaborative culture, and state of the art equipment. Rotations in the CT-ORs and the CT-ICU are popular among medical students and residents alike. The CT Anesthesiology and the Critical Care fellowships are designed to train tomorrow’s leaders. We pride ourselves on our clinical acumen, our educational breadth, and our research endeavors. Our facilities include up-to-date transesophageal echocardiography equipment with high-resolution 3-D in all cardiac operating rooms. Washington University School of Medicine is a large provider of cardiothoracic surgery in the Midwest with a broad referral base across several adjoining states. There is also an international referral base for complex thoracic and cardiac procedures including lung volume reduction surgery, lung transplantation, thoracic cancer surgery, and cardiac arrhythmia surgery. Our case mix and volume ensures that all trainees are able to obtain the experiences that they desire.
