Jump To: Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for the new Public Health and Society Minor offered by Washington University in St. Louis's College of Arts and Sciences. Designed to address inquiries about our innovative program, this page provides essential information for prospective and current students alike. From clarifying the unique aspects of the PH&S minor to detailing future plans and opportunities, we aim to offer comprehensive answers to your queries. Explore below to learn more about the distinctive features, faculty involvement, course offerings, and connections to the new School of Public Health. How is the Public Health & Society minor different from other health-related minors? The core courses in PH&S explicitly focus on public and global health, including practice, research, and scholarship, and emphasize ethical training in public health, including foundational understanding of how issues of equity, inclusion, and social determinants influence health outcomes. Because the core courses in the Program are taught by jointly by Public Health and A&S faculty, the minor provides a transdisciplinary foundation in various forms of inquiry drawn from public health, the natural and social sciences as well as the arts and humanities. By developing these essential skills and perspectives, the Program provides opportunities to develop career pathways in public health, medicine, healthcare, business, government, and life sciences research. When can I declare the minor? Students may declare the minor beginning in the fall 2024 semester. Who will be teaching courses? Core courses will be taught jointly by a faculty member in the Brown School (MPH program) and a faculty member in the College of Arts & Sciences. Electives will be taught by faculty across the University. Will more courses be added to the electives list? As the minor develops, we will continually review new and relevant suggested courses to add to the list of eligible electives. Can I petition to add an elective? Yes, you may reach out to either the co-directors, T.R. Kidder and Lindsay Stark, or the academic coordinator, Kirsten Jacobsen, to inquire about petitioning to add an elective. Will L48 Anth 3283 Intro to Global Health count toward the PH&S minor (in place of LPH 2000 Intro to Public and Global Health)? Yes, PH&S minors who have already completed L48 3283 Intro to Global Health in the Department of Anthropology will be able to count this course toward the PH&S minor. How is this program related to the new School of Public Health? One of the unique features of this Program is its connection to the new School of Public Health (SPH). Through the foundational course instruction, guest lectures, and planned events in connection with the SPH, students will be able to connect with SPH faculty and public health leaders from around the globe. As the new school develops, PH&S students will have access to certain MPH-level classes, and we anticipate faculty from the School of Public Health will offer upper division courses through the A&S Program. Additionally, there will be future opportunities for engagement with SPH research and field engagement. Will there be a major, and if so, when? Plans for a major in Public Health & Society are in progress and more information will be forthcoming during the next academic year. Will there be a 3-2 program? The current 3-2 program structure applies to students taking the minor.
