It was rewarding to connect with these passionate individuals who have great ideas for businesses—and I hope they benefited from my experiences as an entrepreneur. I also visited with Mahendra Gupta before he stepped down from the deanship. He told me about an idea he had to assist scholarship students beyond tuition and books. As I learned during my campus visit, WashU is dedicated to increasing diversity on campus as well as the number of students from financially challenged situations. The number has already grown from 5% three years ago to more than 11% of this year’s freshman class. 231 members of the Class of 2020 are eligible for Pell Grants and 123 members of the class are the first in their families to attend college. As Dean Gupta pointed out to me, a by-product of this diversity has been an inequality in the campus experiences of these students. Mahendra said, “Olin has worked hard to create diversity, but now is our time to create equality of experiences.” His idea was to create a fund to better ensure that the WashU student experience is the same regardless of one’s financial resources. He shared stories about students who didn’t have a suit for interviews, the money to go on recruiting trips, or couldn’t afford to join classmates for coffee at Starbucks. He touched my heart when sharing the reality faced by these students who are attending a great university but can’t afford to take full advantage of its many opportunities. He wanted to create a fund to assist students with extracurricular expenses. Giving back to society is immensely important to me both personally and professionally, so the concept of helping make sure all students have the chance to get the most out of their WashU experience hit home for me. While I’ve always tried to support important causes, this passion actually became the foundation for my new company, ManagInc. ManagInc’s mission is to help guide companies to becoming more socially responsible. As a result, on the spot I offered to become the first donor—and the Olin Educational Opportunities Fund became a reality.  I agreed to donate this year and match the next donation, and I’ll do the same next year. Some other alumni have now come forward with generous gifts, and I hope we can spread the word to grow the fund and directly help students fully participate in all that Olin and WashU have to offer. The Olin Educational Opportunities Fund will be administered by the Undergraduate Program of the Olin Business School. The four-year academic advisors work with all undergraduate students on a confidential basis and will be able to ensure that the students are aware of the fund and receive the necessary support to fully engage in the rich undergraduate experience at Olin Business School.
