These initiatives served to integrate scholarship in cognitive science, social psychology, and education with classroom teaching and learning. The HHMI Inclusive Excellence Project partnered with STEM faculty, student advisors, and undergraduate peer leaders to facilitate an equitable and inclusive academic environment for students. The Transformational Initiative for Education in STEM (TIES) involved a collaboration between CIRCLE and STEM departments to implement and evaluate evidence-based teaching strategies. The Association of American Universities (AAU) STEM Education Initiative was a five-year project that worked with faculty and STEM departments to implement active learning and evidence-based teaching and learning strategies. The Observation Protocol for Active Learning (OPAL) is an assessment tool developed to evaluate active learning in classrooms and provide feedback to instructors. Faculty may download the instrument and/or request an observation. A number of STEM Studies & Interventions were conducted to better understand and improve student learning, attitudes, and engagement. Peer-led Team Learning is an evidence-based method of small-group peer learning used in multiple STEM courses across the university. &＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212;&＃8212; CIRCLE continues to consult with Washington University faculty to evaluate and develop active-learning pedagogies for introductory and upper level courses.
