Matteo Arshad: Intern at JONESWORKSMatteo ArshadWith a background in social media work experience and a major in American Culture Studies, Matteo found working as a digital intern at JONESWORKS, a prestigious PR firm located in the heart of New York City, to be the perfect fit for him. “During my time at JONESWORKS, I undertook a diverse range of responsibilities that showcased my skills and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. From pitching and shooting social media content to designing eye-catching press clip graphics for various JONESWORKS clients, including well-known figures like Tom Brady, Chris Hemsworth, Venus Williams, and Lainey Wilson, I was immersed in the dynamic world of digital marketing. One of the highlights of my internship was leading the creation of the two highest-performing posts in July. I took charge from conceptualization to execution, rallying the entire JW team to participate in the video production process. This experience helped me sharpen my leadership abilities and reinforced my creative and strategic thinking skills. In all, my time at JONESWORKS solidified my passion for a career in the digital marketing field post-graduation. I thoroughly enjoyed every task assigned to me as a digital intern and while the world of PR was initially intimidating to me, it turned out to be a revelation. I found immense satisfaction in the fast-paced, ever-evolving nature of PR work, as it allowed me to engage with a diverse range of clients. As a piece of advice to fellow students seeking internship experiences, I'd encourage you to explore fields that may be outside your comfort zone but pique your interest. My own experience taught me that venturing into uncharted territory can lead to unexpected and rewarding discoveries. In the world of PR, there's never a dull moment, and I couldn't be more thrilled to consider a future in this dynamic field.” Andrew de las Alas: Intern at Missouri Asian American Youth FoundationAndrew de las AlasAndrew de las Alas (he/him) is a junior majoring in Global Studies and minoring in Sociology and Asian American studies. Originally from Indianapolis, his experience growing up in a predominately White environment and strong interest in social justice led him to pursue professional opportunities where he could work directly with communities of color. After joining the St. Louis Fellows program through the Gephardt Center for Civic and Community Engagement, he interned at the Missouri Asian American Youth (MAAY) Foundation. Andrew has had the opportunity to continue learning about nonprofit management, community organizing, and human-centered policy development by continuing his internship to work as a Policy Associate at the MAAY Foundation. Working at a nonprofit as an undergraduate has been an unexpected, but welcome experience. His internship working directly with the Asian community in St. Louis has directly influenced his research interests and extracurriculars. Through community outreach initiatives, Andrew has connected with Filipino leaders across the city. His professional experience at the MAAY Foundation also opened the door to intern at the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri, International Institute of St. Louis, and St. Louis County Public Defender’s Office. Following graduation, Andrew hopes to pursue a joint degree in law and social work to better address the alienation inherent to the criminal legal system. To any students hoping to gain internship experience, take advantage of WashU’s resources. Signing up for newsletters and talking to your professors early goes a long way! But in particular, Andrew encourages them to consider how their identity—be it racial, gender, or religious—can give them a unique perspective on the world’s issues. Emma Gerber: Intern at Cleveland Council on World Affairs and American Civil Liberties UnionEmma GerberEmma Gerber, a Global Studies and French double-major with a minor in creative writing, credits her meaningful internship experiences—a historical archives intern at the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and as an intern at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Missouri, leading their civil rights complaints processing team—for her aspirations to attend law school and study civil rights law. “These two internships were intentionally very different from each other, as I wanted to see what type of work I would enjoy more. While I absolutely loved the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and all of the amazing historical writing work that I got to do there, I ultimately found the ACLU to be a much more engaging and rewarding workplace. I also immediately saw how much I was growing at the ACLU. My perceptions of Missouri were challenged daily as I read letters from across the state. I learned a lot about Civil Rights law and the structure of our rights within a federal democracy. I also grew so much as a leader while managing an amazing team of other college students, many of whom were also WashU students. Though we were only undergrad students, we were given meaningful work to complete and I really felt like we were able to make a difference. I could not be more thankful for having found this internship; I discovered it with the help of the [Center for Career Engagement], which was so incredibly helpful. I always recommend the Career Office to everyone: whether they know exactly what they want to do or they're walking in with absolutely no idea. Their career groups and one-on-one advising has absolutely been the most helpful resource in determining my direction after WashU.” Isabel Huesa: Intern at Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI)Isabel HuesaDuring Isabel’s senior year at WashU, she embarked on a transformative journey as a Civic Scholar, engaging in an internship with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI). This unique opportunity allowed her to combine her academic pursuits and personal passions, culminating in a meaningful Civic Summer Project. “My academic background in Anthropology: Global Health and the Environment, coupled with minors in Biology and South Asian Cultures and Civilizations, provided a strong foundation for my internship. However, the Civic Scholars Program encouraged independent exploration, enabling me to delve into my areas of interest while receiving guidance and support from advisors. For my Civic Summer Project, I aspired to amalgamate my academic interest in addressing social determinants of health with my passion for bhangra and South Asian culture, eventually leading me to the PHFI and matched with the RKSK project, which aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) peer-to-peer public health intervention targeting rural adolescents in India. My role involved analyzing extensive interview transcriptions, synthesizing impacts, and creating promotional materials to raise awareness about the program. This opportunity highlighted the power of research, community engagement, and the complexities of international civic involvement.
