Lopata Hall serves as a physical link between Sever, Cupples II and Urbauer halls. A unique feature of the building is the four-story Lopata Gallery. During the first few years of the gallery’s existence, there were plants hanging from the ceiling. However, these plants made the air so humid that it would occasionally rain on the people below, so the plants were removed. Stanley and Lucy Lopata Stanley Lopata was a 1935 Washington University College of Arts & Sciences graduate. Founders of Carboline Corporation, Mr. and Mrs. Lopata grew the basement chemical laboratory into a $46 million business. Together, they were longtime friends of Washington University, and especially the School of Engineering & Applied Science. Other memorials to them on campus are Lopata Courtyard in Simon Hall, the Lopata Classic, a men’s basketball tournament held every fall, and Lopata Plaza. The Village also bears their name on the Lucy and Stanley Lopata House.
