Opportunities for advanced study and research are presently available in biomechanics, energy conversion and efficiency, advanced materials, nanotechnology and computational mechanics. Faculty and students collaborate on interdisciplinary projects with partners in biomedical engineering, energy, environmental and chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, biology and medicine. Students interested in these fields and registered in the department may take courses offered by these programs and may include faculty from these departments on thesis committees. Doctor of Science (DSc) The department offers the Doctor of Science (DSc) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Materials Science. The requirements for the DSc in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering are identical to those for the PhD except: (1) the mentored teaching experience is not required for the DSc; (2) the residency requirement for the DSc is limited to 24 units completed at Washington University; (3) the requirements for research rotations and the time limits for completion of the qualifying exam, proposal, and thesis defense for the PhD do not apply to the DSc. The DSc is recommended for students who will pursue doctoral studies part-time. Stipend support from grants or contracts is typically not available to DSc candidates.
