All types of neurosurgical procedures including awake craniotomies, vascular and complex spinal procedures as well as interventional neuroradiology procedures are performed regularly. Innovative techniques such as intraoperative MRI laser-guided surgery for intracranial tumors are constantly being developed in our operative theaters placing our overall neurosurgical teams at the forefront of a new area. Furthermore, our close association with the Neuro Intensive Care Unit — a 20-bed, PET scan equipped facility — allows us to give our patients seamless care throughout their entire peri-operative period. Three faculty specializing in Neuroanesthesia cover this activity. We also provide a fellowship program in Neuroanesthesia for the education and training of CA2 and CA3 residents. Our main focus for investigation is monitoring for cerebral ischemia, epilepsy surgery, and electroencephalography/corticography and postoperative vision loss. Vascular Transplant Anesthesia Anesthesia for Vascular, Abdominal Organ Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery Our team provides perioperative care for critically ill patients in three high-volume surgical services. We anesthetize, annually, more than 5,500 patients undergoing complex vascular procedures, including open aortic reconstruction, surgery for carotid and peripheral vascular disease, and thoracic outlet syndrome. Our center is a national leader in endovascular surgery, treating more than 200 abdominal and 100 thoracic aortic aneurysms annually (2009 data) with one of the best outcomes in the nation. We participate in roughly 100 liver and 200 kidney transplants annually and in the recently established pancreas transplant program. Transplant patient and organ survival are above the national average. Hepatobiliary surgery, with one of the largest volumes in the nation, is credited with superior outcomes and innovations in surgeries for malignancies of liver and pancreas. Our anesthesia faculty have specific expertise and an established clinical research track in hemodynamic monitoring, including novel, minimally invasive modalities. We share OR space and are clinically and educationally fully integrated with the cardiothoracic anesthesia group, providing clinical cross-coverage and conducting joint weekly conferences. Residents (CA1- CA3) on our service manage increasingly complex clinical scenarios with emphasis on challenging hemodynamic and hemostatic problems. Advanced clinical rotations are offered to CA-3 residents. All residents have an opportunity to present at weekly conferences, participate in clinical research projects and to publish case reports.
