They harness blood-forming stem cells and cells from the immune system to bring patients lasting remissions and cures. Patients who are treated through the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies Center benefit from a dynamic, “bench to bedside” environment in which laboratory research conducted by their own physicians is often incorporated into their care. Many patients are enrolled in clinical trials that provide access to leading-edge therapies. The Washington University Physicians affiliated with the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies Center treat patients as a team. They are excellent at coordinating both in-patient and out-patient care, and they work with nurses who specialize in caring for patients undergoing cellular therapies. The Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapies Center is anchored by Siteman’s nationally-renowned stem cell transplant program. Stem cell, or bone marrow, transplants are the oldest form of cellular therapy, and Washington University Physicians have been performing them at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for nearly 40 years. Since 1982, they have performed more than 7,500 stem cell transplants. Today, the transplant program treats approximately 400 patients a year, and the new Stem Cell and Cellular Therapies Center is built upon its exceptional protocols and lively research culture. What’s more, the same physicians who staff the transplant program also staff the Center, which means that patients can move flexibly between transplants and other forms of cellular therapy. Immunotherapy Immunotherapies are treatments that help the immune system fight cancer. Stem cell transplants and CAR T-cell therapy are forms of immunotherapy that replace or genetically modify the immune system. However, there are also other techniques, such as medications and vaccines, that allow a patient’s immune system to better detect and eliminate cancerous cells.
