Our department has a fourth mission: to improve the diversity of our specialty as well as to improve the health equity of the patients we serve. The 2021 Annual Report illustrates the remarkable accomplishments of faculty, researchers and trainees in the Department of Surgery over the past year. Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Section of Cardiac Surgery Nationally recognized Washington University cardiac surgeons offer the latest advances in technology and innovative therapies while striving to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients with heart conditions. Section of Thoracic Surgery Board-certified, internationally recognized thoracic surgeons provide leading-edge respiratory medical and critical care, research and training. Additionally, these advanced surgeons practice at one of the most active transplant centers in the world. Section of Pediatric Cardiacthoracic Surgery Washington University pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons provide industry-leading treatments to children with congenital cardiac disorders. The section also leads basic, translational and clinical research studies, and offers a congenital cardiac surgery fellowship. Division of General Surgery Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery Washington University acute and critical care surgeons specialize in traumatic injuries, emergency surgeries, geriatric trauma, general surgeries, wound and burn care, and critical care. The section also offers a surgical critical care fellowship. Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery Washington University colorectal surgeons provide the highest level of care for colorectal cancer patients and work with gastroenterologists to provide comprehensive care to patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The section also offers a colorectal surgery fellowship. Section of Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic and GI Surgery Washington University HPB-GI surgeons specialize in diseases of the liver, biliary tree, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, and retroperitoneum, and are at the forefront of research for improved therapies and treatments for these disorders. The section also offers a one-year HPB-GI surgery fellowship. Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery Washington University minimally invasive surgeons perform a range of laparoscopic and robotic procedures for hernias and gastrointestinal conditions such as swallowing disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, adrenal gland tumors and morbid obesity. The section also offers a one-year advanced GI/MIS/foregut fellowship. Section of Surgical Oncology Washington University surgical oncologists provide the most up-to-date care for breast and endocrine system diseases, melanoma and sarcoma while advancing treatments through leading-edge, multidisciplinary research. The section also offers a breast disease fellowship. Section of Transplant Surgery Washington University transplant surgeons offer the latest advancements in kidney, liver, islet cell and pancreas transplants. Faculty are leaders in the field of transplantation research and train fellows in a nationally recognized, two-year certified program. Section of Vascular Surgery Washington University vascular surgeons offer minimally invasive surgical treatments for patients with vascular diseases, such as thoracic, aortic or renal aneurysms, thoracic outlet syndrome and arterial, venous and lymphatic diseases. Faculty lead basic, translational and clinical research, and provide clinical training in accredited residency and fellowship programs. Division of Pediatric Surgery Division of Pediatric Surgery Washington University pediatric surgeons offer compassionate, comprehensive treatment for a spectrum of medical conditions in children, from birth defects to hernias, traumatic injuries, burns, and cancerous tumors. Faculty are actively involved in many areas of research and offer a pediatric surgery fellowship. Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Washington University plastic and reconstructive surgeons provide head-to-toe expertise in craniofacial, aesthetic, breast and general reconstructive, gender affirming, hand, limb preservation, lymphedema, nerve and pediatric plastic surgeries. The division also offers comprehensive training in residency and fellowship programs. Division of Public Health Sciences Division of Public Health Sciences The Division of Public Health Sciences leads in public health research, education and outreach by providing a platform for investigators across disciplines to collaborate on projects affecting clinical care and outcomes. Epidemiologists, statisticians, behavioral scientists, economists, health communication scientists work with a shared goal – preventing disease and improving the health of populations. Division of Urologic Surgery Division of Urologic Surgery Washington University urologists offer a range of leading-edge surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for medical conditions of the urogenital tract. The division is a national leader in research on detecting and determining the level of risk of prostate cancer. The division also offers training in residency and fellowship programs.
