Washington University Physicians diagnose and treat nearly 650 new patients with a gynecologic malignancy and oversee more than 10,000 outpatient visits each year. Our specialists are also conducting innovative research and investigating new therapies in clinical trials that aren’t available elsewhere. How large is the gynecologic oncology program at Siteman? The gynecologic oncology program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is the largest in the Midwest. National leaders Our multidisciplinary tumor board meets weekly and includes gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and nurse coordinators at Siteman. The board discusses surgical pathology and provides individualized, evidence-based treatment plans for each of our patients. The team is nationally recognized for its expertise in patient care and research. What is the benefit of multidisciplinary cancer care? Having a multidisciplinary care team means that you will have a full team of specialists reviewing your case and determining best treatment options. What sets Washington University Physicians apart? Our Washington University Physicians are members of the NRG Oncology Group, a multi-institutional clinical research group funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). We are also a top five accruing Lead Academic Participating Site (LAPS). Washington University specialists serve in leadership roles in national groups, including: The Society for Gynecologic Oncology (SOG) The Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) By leading these groups, our physicians are helping to set national and international standards for the care of patients with ovarian, uterine and cervical cancer. If I need a biopsy, who will interpret my tissue? All patients undergoing biopsies or surgery have their tissue interpreted by a team of pathologists that is solely dedicated to reviewing gynecologic oncology cases. Leading-edge brachytherapy Siteman has one of the largest Brachytherapy Centers in the United States and performs more than 1,200 treatments for gynecologic cancer each year. Our Washington University radiation oncologists are among the few in the country to offer image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) using MRI guidance. They have set the protocols and standards of care for this highly specialized and target-specific treatment that allows for adapting both the dose and parameters of radiation to create personalized patient specific treatments. What makes Siteman a great destination for brachytherapy? Our radiation oncology team is the only in the region specializing in advanced radiation therapy techniques, including: Combined brachytherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) Interstitial implants Adaptive radiation therapy Proton therapy Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) Specialized services Fertility: Siteman and Washington University School of Medicine offer the latest fertility preservation treatments for both men and women who undergo chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery to treat their cancer. Specialists in our Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Center offer oocyte (egg) and embryo banking as well as sperm banking through cryopreservation. Genetic testing: The Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Center provides genetic testing services for those diagnosed with an inherited form of gynecologic cancer or who have a family history of cancer. The center offers information, genetic testing and guidance about the prevention of gynecologic cancers so that informed decisions can be made. Inpatient services: The gynecology inpatient service has an entire hospital floor that includes a team of nurses with advanced in gynecologic oncology care, including chemotherapy administration.
