Normally, the two senior (third-year) members serve as Co-chairs of the committee in each academic year.  No two faculty members from the same department should serve as concurrent members. The Dean may identify certain senior administrative officers (e.g., Vice Deans) as non-voting members. Eligibility:  Any member of the Faculty at any rank from any track. Term: Three years (staggered elections when possible). Appointment Process:  Faculty election process. Functions/Duties: The Council serves as a conduit and liaison between the Faculty and the Administration and brings matters of concern from the Faculty to the Dean. All members of the Faculty are free to communicate with members of the Council about any matter, and the Council may solicit Faculty opinion on matters that come before it. The Council convenes at its own initiative, or at the request of the Dean of Arts & Sciences. The Dean normally convenes the Council once per month during the academic year. The Council, in consultation with the Dean of Arts & Sciences and the Administration, establishes the agenda for meetings of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences. The co-Chairs of the Council regularly report to the Faculty on its deliberations. The Council acts as the nominating committee for elective committees of Arts & Sciences, may assign temporary, substitute, or replacement members of Arts & Sciences committees as needed, and may appoint ad hoc committees for various purposes. The Dean may consult with the Council on issues of concern in the administration of the school, and the Council may, at the request of the Dean or on its own initiative, act in an advisory capacity to the Dean of Arts & Sciences on confidential matters. The Council may make recommendations to the Dean of Arts & Sciences or the Faculty to propose or change policy. The Council may consider any and all matters that relate to the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, except for matters reserved to Advisory Committee on Tenure, Promotion, and Personnel and the Review Committee on Faculty Personnel Procedures. The Council may consult with and advise the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs or the Vice Dean of Graduate Education concerning changes in existing policies or new policies in those administrations. The Council acts as the deliberative agency of the Faculty on reappointment of the Dean of Arts & Sciences and reports its findings to the Provost. The members of the Council serve as the Faculty's representatives on the Bicameral Committee of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, at such times as this Committee may meet to resolve differences in legislation passed by the Faculty and by the Council of Students of Arts & Sciences in different forms.   Quick Links2021 A&S STRATEGIC PLANForms & policiesEventsDirectoryContact One wustlAdditional information Arts & Sciences Graduate Studies in A&SCopyright 2024 by:Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. LouisFollow Us Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube LinkedIn Contact Us: Office of the Dean [email protected] Visit the main Washington University in St. Louis website1 Brookings Drive / St. Louis, MO 63130 / wustl.edu
