The Department of Anesthesiology is heavily funded by grants and consistently ranks among the top five nationally in NIH funding. Our research efforts are organized into three primary divisions*: the Division of Basic Research (DBR), the Washington University Pain Center (WUPC), and the Division of Clinical & Translational Research (DoCTR), and one Center: the Center for Clinical Pharmacology (CCP), a collaborative partnership with the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis. * Research projects for students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows are currently available in all divisions & the CCP. Division of Basic Research (DBR) The Division of Basic Research (DBR) explores fundamental scientific questions relevant to medicine and anesthesiology. Learn more Center for Clinical Pharmacology The Department of Anesthesiology and the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis established this center which is focused on human-oriented research with the goal of improving the use of current and new therapeutics and diagnostics.  Learn more Latest News Hector-Greene receives FAER Mentored Research Training Grant Melissa Hector-Greene, MD, PhD, was recently awarded a Mentored Research Training Grant from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) for her project titled, “Pathogenic Mechanisms of R190W Mutation in LMNA-Associated Cardiomyopathy.” This prestigious grant provides $250,000 in funding over two years to support the development of essential skills, the generation of preliminary data, and the publication of research findings. Multicenter clinical study supports safety of deep general anesthesia (Links to an external site) New research supports earlier findings that indicate that anesthesia is no more hazardous for the brain at higher doses than at lower doses. Cucinello-Ragland honored with 2024 NIH Outstanding Scholars in Neuroscience Award Jessi Cucinello-Ragland, PhD, has been named a recipient of the 2024 NIH Outstanding Scholars in Neuroscience Award Program (OSNAP).
