Providers Washington University bone marrow and stem cell transplant specialists treat particular forms of cancer, such as leukemia or genetic disorders of the blood. The bone marrow and stem cell transplant program at Siteman Cancer Center is one of the largest in the world, completing nearly 500 transplants each year. Our bone marrow and stem cell transplant experts use the latest techniques to collect stem cells or peripheral blood for allogeneic transplants, in which transplanted cells come from siblings and unrelated donors. By manipulating stem cell grafts, they also are working to reduce tumor contamination and bolster immunity. Whenever it is appropriate, they recommend that patients participate in clinical trials, research studies that test whether new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer are safe and effective. Bone marrow transplantation can be a successful treatment for a variety of cancers, including: Acute and chronic leukemia Lymphoma Non-Hodgkin lymphoma Hodgkin disease Multiple myeloma Solid tumors, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer and germ cell tumors Some noncancerous blood diseases Aplastic anemia, preleukemia and other marrow failure states Rare inherited and acquired disorders, such as thalassemia, amyloidosis and autoimmune diseases A bone marrow transplant is an intensive cancer treatment that can be physically and mentally stressful for the patient and family. Washington University’s team of leukemia doctors work with a whole team of specialists in pheresis (stem cell collection and transfusion medicine), bone marrow transplant and oncology nursing. Other team members are specialists in pharmacy, nutrition, physical therapy, social work, pastoral care, data management and financial planning who treat patients with skill, care and understanding.
