Our research falls into five broad categories: Algebra & Combinatorics, Analysis, Geometry & Topology, Statistics, and Applied Mathematics. Our faculty have a deep passion for their research, which they share with one another through collaborations and with students through mentoring. Our faculty and students also engage in fruitful collaborations with the School of Engineering & Applied Science, the School of Medicine, and departments across Arts & Sciences.  We strive to make our department an exciting place both to learn and do research in mathematics and statistics. We have regular seminars and colloquia with lively participation from faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and visitors, and we seek opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff to interact in productive ways.  New Major in Mathematics & Computer Science The School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) and the College of Arts & Sciences (A&S) developed a new major that efficiently captures the intersection of the complementary studies of computer science and math. Joint Major Details Women in Math The Department of Mathematics is committed to supporting all of our students through their academic careers and beyond. Check out the link below for opportunities to be a part of our community, and assistance for women interested in math or connected to our department. Resources include a chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, regular events focused on supporting and connecting women, and more. Connect with Women in Math I've enjoyed math since getting past multiplication tables, but I never really thought I would be a math major. After taking a few math classes here, I realized just how amazing both the subject and the department were. It's so nice to be in a community of quality people who enjoy discovering math for both the sake of interest and for describing and influencing other areas of study. ―Lauren Ellison Applied Math, Class of 2020 upcoming eventsSee More Events First Day of Class, Fall 2024 August 26, 2024 Labor Day Holiday, 2024 September 02, 2024 Fall Break, 2024 October 05 - October 08, 2024 Awards & Notables, Faculty, ResearchAustralian Research Council Discovery AwardRead MoreAwards & Notables, Graduate, ResearchGraduate Research Assistantships in Developing Countries (GRAID) ProgramRead MoreSupport the Department of MathematicsYou can support the Department of Mathematics by giving to Wash U.
