Our mission is to have a national and international impact on orthopedics through excellence in clinical care, education, research and leadership. We will accomplish this goal by providing evidence-based and cost-effective musculoskeletal care with access for all. We will increasingly become the authoritative resource locally, regionally, and nationally for the most straightforward to the most complex orthopaedic problems by supporting all faculty and removing access barriers for patients. We will seek to train future leaders, providing outstanding musculoskeletal education in an inclusive and equitable environment. The Department will support and resource basic, translational, and clinical research to transform the future of orthopaedics through discovery and innovation. All Department members, including faculty, trainees, and staff, will be supported to achieve their individual career goals in alignment with departmental priorities in an environment of mentorship and mutual respect; we will demonstrate intentionality in allyship for those who are underrepresented in orthopedic and rehabilitative care, equitably facilitating the success of all. Each of us will uphold these values and champion them with all who touch our core missions.   Residency Programs Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a leader in training young physicians. In the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, we offer two residency programs: orthopaedic surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Our supportive learning environment provide our residents with opportunities to acquire knowledge to evaluate and treat a variety of clinical problems, provide compassionate care, and demonstrate ethical behavior in the practice of orthopaedic surgery and physical medicine and rehabilitation. See what makes our residency training unique by visiting the links below.  Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program Fellowship Program Washington University Orthopedics offer fellowship training in 10 sub-specialties. With our large patient volumes and association with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, fellows receive an outstanding operative experience. As one of the three components of our mission as an academic health care leader, fellows participate in enriching research endeavors and graduate ready to begin a career in academic medicine or private practice.  Externship Program Our goal is to provide exceptional education and to inspire the next generation of orthopedic and physical medicine and rehabilitation providers. Our externship program provides medical students, in their final year of study, exposure to a broad cross-section of orthopaedic and physiatry domains through inpatient, outpatient, tutorial and didactic experiences.
