Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is a field of study dedicated to systematic and reflective inquiry of the effects of one’s teaching practices on student learning. SoTL incorporates knowledge from educational and cognitive psychology research, and it leads to the dissemination of new knowledge. SoTL encourages faculty, graduate students, and postdocs to use their expertise as disciplinary scholars in their approaches to teaching. SoTL scholars explore and examine novel teaching strategies to continue the goal of improving student learning through focused inquiry, exploration of research, deliberate planning and implementation, and examination of collected data. Students who take the Introduction to SoTL seminar are able to work closely with Center for Teaching and Learning staff to further develop, implement, and analyze their SoTL projects.
