Providers Washington University otologists and neurotologists specialize in world-class treatment for chronic ear disease, hearing loss, dizziness, tinnitus and facial nerve disorder. The cochlear implant team includes otologists, neurotologists, audiologists, nurses and support staff who treat patients suffering from moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss and who qualify for cochlear implants. What is a cochlear implant? A cochlear implant is an electronic prosthetic replacement for damaged cells in the inner ear. The implanted part includes an electronic circuit surgically placed in the skull behind the ear (on the mastoid process of the temporal bone). This circuit is attached to a bundle of tiny wires that are inserted into the cochlea. At the end of the wires are electrodes that travel along a portion of the length of the cochlea. Electrical stimulation of each electrode usually causes a different pitch perception. The other part of the device is worn externally over the ear and is made up of a speech processor, cable and transmitting coil. There are several different manufacturers of implants.
