One of the nation’s largest academic medical centers, the medical campus covers 186 acres directly east of Forest Park, and on-site hospital affiliates provide 1,893 beds. Two large components of the medical center — nationally ranked Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital — are members of BJC HealthCare, the first integrated health care system in the country to couple academic teaching hospitals with community hospitals.  The campus includes over 2.6 million gross square feet of research and instructional space. Completed in 2005, the six-story Farrell Learning and Teaching Center provides flexible and functional space dedicated to medical student and graduate student teaching. It houses several resources including: Student carrels, which promote group learning The Howard and Joyce Wood Simulation Center, one of several simulation facilities on campus that provide the latest in simulation training State-of-the-art lecture halls and small group meeting rooms Ample student study space, both reservable and non-reservable Despite the large size of the medical center, clinical education occurs largely at individual patients’ bedsides and in one-on-one or small group settings. It’s the best of all circumstances: a broad patient base that provides exposure to wide-ranging clinical conditions, but in an intimate mentoring environment.
