He joined the College Office in 2007 as an assistant dean, where today he oversees four-year advising and first-year experience in Arts & Sciences.  He earned his BA at the University of Delaware, his MA in English at Tulane University, and his PhD in English at Washington University. He fell in love with teaching and advising and went on to work as a professor of literature and composition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and St. Louis Community College for several years before coming back to WashU. Throughout his work with the College Office, his greatest joy is working with WashU’s bright, motivated and endlessly curious students as they design, test-drive, and revise their life plans on the way to creating lives of purpose and meaning. Matt has lived in Delaware; Frankfurt, Germany; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Birmingham, Alabama; and now calls University City his home, where he lives with his wife (a UCity native), two sons, a daughter, a chocolate Lab, and three rescue cats.  When he is not at work, he enjoys gardening, baking, camping, and tai chi.
