Students will study classic texts from different historical periods and cultural traditions, ranging from Sophocles and William Shakespeare to Fyodor Dostoyevski and Toni Morrison. We will pay particular attention to the following questions: What do we owe each other? What is the relationship between equity and the letter of the law? How do different cultures determine what is just and what is unjust? What is the role of art in the representation of injustice? Aimed at developing the habits of close textual analysis that are central to the study of texts in the humanities, the course will help students cultivate the art of critical judgment. Course is for first-year, non-transfer students only.
